According to the Gospels, the Tomb of the Virgin Mary would be at the foot of the Mount of Olives. According to the New Testament, by the call of God, the Virgin Mary ascended into heaven with her body. Thus, the tomb is empty. This place is not only important for the tomb of the Virgin Mary, but also for the location of a first church erected by Juvenal of Jerusalem, the first patriarch of Jerusalem, in the 5th century. The church was destroyed twice and rebuilt by the Crusaders in the 12th century.
Little information about photographers is currently known. The ZANGAKI brothers (probably George and Constantinos ZANGAKI) were two commercial photographers of Greek origin. They were active between the 1870s and the 1890s in the Middle East, notably in Egypt. Ancient monuments and scenes from everyday life there were their favorite subjects. Their customers were mostly European travelers. The brothers were among the first commercial photographers to produce large-scale photographies of Egypt.
